Frequently Asked Questions

I know I need to talk to someone but do I really need therapy?

There are times in our lives when we can feel stuck, lost, alone, hurt, frustrated, stressed or depressed. This is when seeking therapy to talk issues through, be heard and understood, really makes a difference and can help you resolve issues and make the changes you need to. Although I believe that we have great capacity within ourselves to find our own solutions, sometimes we need to untangle our thoughts and feelings with someone in a safe, caring and non-judgemental environment.

What can I expect from therapy?

After your initial sessions I will discuss with you my understanding of the problems and issues. We will agree a therapy plan; with clear objectives and a view of the possible outcomes of therapy. If you have any questions about any aspect of your therapy, please ask at any point and you will be answered fully. If you could benefit from any treatment that I do not provide, I have an ethical obligation, and am happy to assist you, in obtaining those treatments and wherever possible I will give you a number of referrals that you can contact.

What about confidentiality?

I ensure that all sessions are treated confidentially and all reasonable steps are taken to protect your privacy. All information disclosed within sessions and the written records relating to those sessions are confidential and may not be revealed to anyone without your permission, except where disclosure is required by law. An example where a therapist is required to act responsibly and disclose client information to a third party is where there is reasonable suspicion of child, dependent or elder abuse or neglect or where a client presents a danger to self, others or property. In such circumstances no action would be taken ,whenever possible, without you being informed.

Guidance:

When you are considering working with a therapist, I would recommend that the above credentials are the minimun you should expect. Their webistes and social media should be very clear about who they are in terms of qualifications, membership of recognised governing bodies, ethical codes of conduct, practice approaches and CPD. Please feel free to ask whatever questions you need to, there should be no problem in providing answers.
